Very common issue, had it with my MK2 and smacking the dash like an old TV would bring it back. If that's the case then it's going to be a solder issue. The fact that your LCD is dead is another clue to bad solder. What you need to do to fix it permanently is pull the instrument cluster out and resolder the connector for the dash wiring loom.

If after power is removed and the alarm goes off , check the bonnet connection. If it does not go off then it has to be the wiring harness. Quote.
